About Roger M. Millar, PE, FASCE, FAICP

Secretary of Transportation

Washington State Department of Transportation

Roger Millar joined the Washington State Department of Transportation as Deputy Secretary in October 2015 and was appointed Secretary of Transportation in August 2016. He oversees an agency that is the steward of a complex, multimodal transportation system, and responsible for ensuring that people and goods move safely and efficiently.

Millar is an experienced land use and transportation engineer, planner and program manager with an international reputation for innovative approaches to conservation and development. The prominent theme that has run through his career has been planning and implementing transportation systems that are not ends unto themselves; but rather the means toward economic vitality, environmental stewardship, social equity, public health, and aesthetic quality. His work on the Portland Streetcar and the Glenwood Springs to Aspen BRT provided communities nationwide with new mobility tools. His Complete Streets leadership helped create a national movement for transportation systems that are safe, convenient, and pleasant for all users, regardless of how they choose to travel. His State DOT leadership is bringing innovation to agencies with enormous influence on transportation investment.

Millar is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He is the vice president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), chair of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America Board of Directors, vice president of the ASCE Transportation and Development Institute, chair of the AASHTO Council on Public Transportation, co-chair of the Cooperative Automated Transportation Coalition, and a member of the National Operations Center of Excellence Strategic Advisory Council and the National Complete Streets Coalition Steering Committee.

Millar graduated from the University of Virginia in 1982.

About the Transportation Club of Seattle

The Transportation Club of Seattle has been at the center of the Seattle area transportation community for over 108 years. Founded in 1910, the club was formed to encourage the study by members of transportation issues; promote closer business relationships, promote the welfare of its membership as well as to sponsor educational programs and discussions pertaining to traffic and transportation matters. The club holds monthly lunch and learn meetings throughout the year, provides an annual golf tournament and supports the Salvation Army through its annual holiday auction. The Transportation Club of Seattle is a member of the Logistics & Transportation Association of North America.

We are looking forward to connecting with the community!
